Woman dies in crash involving train in southwest Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Authorities say a woman has died after her SUV was hit by a train in southwest Louisville.

WAVE-TV (http://bit.ly/1J7SfPk ) reports a Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman says the woman, who was driving a red Ford Edge, attempted to cross the railroad tracks on Abbots Beach Road when she was hit by a Norfolk Southern Line train at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The spokesman said there are no crossing arms at the intersection, but several witnesses did tell officers they heard the train blow its whistle.

The woman was alone in her vehicle at the time of the crash. Her name has not been released.

Emergency crews shut down traffic on Dixie Highway. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating the crash.
