Woman accused of abandoning her children at school

LONDON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Laurel County mother is accused of abandoning her two children at Hazel Green Elementary School, according to State Police.

Investigators say they received a call Wednesday from the school principal saying there were still two children at the school because no one showed up to pick them up off the bus.

Troopers went to the family’s home looking for the mother, Amanda Reynolds.  Investigators say Reynolds’ boyfriend, Freddy Scalf, answered the door and told them Reynolds had left to get a ride to go pick up the children because she didn’t have a car.

KSP says they arrested Scalf on an unrelated outstanding warrant.

Troopers say two hours after their initial visit to the home, the school called back to say the children still had not been picked up.

Investigators returned to the house and say they found Reynolds and a four-year old inside.  They say the house had deplorable living conditions and no running water.

State Police say Reynolds admitted she was home during investigators initial visit, but was hiding because she had an outstanding warrant out against her.

Investigators say at this point, it was 8:00 p.m., and the children still had not been picked up from school.

Reynolds was arrested and taken to the Laurel County Detention Center.
