Three hikers rescued after getting lost in Red River Gorge
WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Three hikers are safe after being rescued overnight in the Red River Gorge.
According to the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team, crews received a 911 call around 9 p.m. Monday for three lost hikers near Adena Arch. Using a locator link, rescuers were able to pinpoint the group’s location, but because they only had cell phones for light and temperatures were dropping, the team decided to reach them directly rather than give directions remotely.
Officials said the hikers were not dressed for the cold and were in extremely rugged, cliffy terrain. Rescuers used an unofficial trail and low-angle hand lines to navigate steep and slippery sections, ensuring everyone made it out safely. The group and rescuers exited the woods just after midnight.
Search and rescue officials are reminding hikers to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions and to always carry the proper gear when exploring the Gorge.
