Winchester Restaurant Patrons Victims Of Internet Hackers
According to Winchester Police, the credit card and banking information for about 50 to 100 people who ate at the Puerta Grande restaurant was stolen.
Officials add that they expect more victims to come forward now that word is out about the incident.
Police say the theft appears to be the result of a major data breach and that the stolen data was used to make purchases in North Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania and the Domincan Republic.
Detective Briscoe of Winchester Police says victims’ credit cards were hacked once they scanned it through the register at the restaurant.
"During the transit, it got hacked and some of the numbers were taken," he said.
Briscoe says the restaurant has taken their old system offline for all three of their establishments in Winchester, though only one of them was hacked.
The detective noted that there isn’t any indication or evidence to show that any of the employees of the restaurant were involved.
Anyone who has eaten at the restaurant is being urged to keep a close eye on their banking and credit card statements.
