Winchester identifies source of unusual odor reported across community
WINCHESTER, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – City officials say they have identified the source of an unusual odor that prompted numerous complaints throughout Winchester on Monday, according to a statement released by the City of Winchester.
The city reported that multiple departments were dispatched after receiving calls about a strong smell, particularly in the Hill Street area. Officials conducted assessments to determine whether there was any safety risk.
According to the city’s statement, a spot check by the Winchester Fire Marshal at a nearby fertilizer plant revealed that a new organic product being used at the facility was responsible for the odor. The substance, described as similar to tree sap, produced the strong smell reported by residents. Officials say the product was not burned at any time, and the company has since stopped using it.
Before the Fire Marshal’s findings, the Winchester Fire Department conducted a walkthrough of the area using gas monitoring equipment, which detected no leaks. Columbia Gas also performed pressure tests at its transfer station and confirmed that all connected valves were operating normally.
As an additional precaution, Winchester Police used cadaver dogs as part of their investigation, though no findings were detected.
The city says relevant departments will continue monitoring the area and responding as needed.
