Pilot program “Swim at the Gym” begins in March in Clark County

New swimming program will be set up in Winchester in an effort to drown-proof Clark County

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WTVQ) – Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation wants to prevent drownings by providing swim lessons to children. While many school districts across the country have their own pools and swimming programs, the Clark County School District does not. It’s why Winchester Parks and Rec created pilot lessons for the new preschool swim program. It’s called “Swim At the Gym” and will start in March.

Clark County Preschool will be the first students to make a splash in the program. The hope is not just to provide a fun and educational swim lesson, but life saving lessons as well.

“We are planning on them being full beginners with no experience in the water. Over a long enough time frame..we would love to drown-proof Clark County. Downing is a common cause of death for children. If we could get to the point where we could drown proof Clark County that would be the long term goal,” said Kevin Ryan, Aquatics Director for Winchester Parks and Recreation.

Winchester Parks and Recreation plans to first test the waters with the nearby preschool and then eventually expand to other preschools in the county.
