Whooping cough case confirmed at Lafayette High School sparks health department investigation

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A confirmed case of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, has surfaced at Lafayette High School in Lexington, marking the city’s fourth occurrence since late April. The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department says it is investigating to determine if there’s a potential connection between the cases, while also collaborating closely with Fayette County Public Schools to raise awareness among caregivers regarding the threat of pertussis.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads through coughing and sneezing. While it can affect individuals of all ages, it poses the most serious risks to infants and those with chronic diseases.

As part of their efforts to keep the public informed, the health department encourages individuals to visit www.LFCHD.org/pertussis for additional information on pertussis, its symptoms, and preventive measures.
