Whitley County deputy injured by liquid in syringe during drug arrest

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Whitley County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering following a drug arrest that left his hand burned.

According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Brandon Prewitt responded to a call Wednesday about two people in a car at a rest area along I-75 who appeared unresponsive.

The sheriff’s office says Prewitt found a man slumped over the wheel of the car and a woman unresponsive in the passenger seat and a needle was in plain view.

When Prewitt picked up the needle, some of the liquid inside made contact with his gloves.

He says he began feeling a burning sensation at the location where the liquid landed on his gloves.

Prewitt went to the hospital for treatment but the sheriff’s office says further tests are needed to determined what caused the burn.

The two people in car, 25-year-old Megan Sayne and 36-year-old Patrick Kenny, both from Tennessee, were arrested an charged with drug possession.

The sheriff’s office says heroin and “ice” crystal methamphetamine was found in the car.
