Whitley Co. Mail Carrier Charged for Stealing Mail

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Whitley County Sheriff is urging area residents to check their financial records after arresting a mail carrier for taking debit cards and other items from the mail he was supposed to be delivering.

24-year-old Alexander Johnson, contracted by the United States Postal Service, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with theft, after a search of his truck, according to the Sheriff.

The Sheriff says investigators found 18 items not addressed to him in the truck, with a total of six debit cards not assigned to him.

Johnson delivered mail to residents in the HWY 92E and Brown’s Creek area, according to the Sheriff.

A United States Postal Inspector assisted the Sheriff’s Office in making the arrest, after suspicions that Johnson was taking mail began to arise.

“The people these cards were issued to, it’s rough on them. The banks help, but the victims still go through a lot trying to straighten these issues out,” says Sheriff Colan J. Harrell.  “Anybody who’s ever been a victim of identity theft or financial fraud knows how upsetting, frustrating and time consuming this can be. We’re glad to have made an arrest. Our department put a lot of time into this investigation, months worth. We’re continuing the investigation and here to help anybody else who was affected.”
