Where can I dispose of my Christmas tree, lights?

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — Now that Christmas has passed, you may be wondering what to do with your tree and lights. The city of Lexington has a plan.

Lexington’s recycling program takes in natural and artificial Christmas trees and holiday lights.

From Jan. 3-27, 2024, here’s how to recycle your trees:

Natural Christmas Trees

  • Remove all lights and decorations
  • Place at the curb on your regular collection day
  • Natural trees will be composted at the city’s composting facility
  • Fayette County residents without curbside city service can take their natural trees to the Haley Pike Waste Management Facility
  • Another option is to take your trees to the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources sites from Dec. 26, 2023, to Jan. 15, 2024. You can head here for more information: Tree recycling

Artificial Christmas Trees

  • Place at the curb next to your green trash cart on your regular collection day
  • Trees in good condition can be donated to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore

From Nov. 21, 2023, to Jan. 14, 2024, here’s how to recycle your lights:

Holiday Light Collection Drive

  • String lights, extension cords, light sensors, power strips, timers, electric candles, other electronics, and household batteries can be taken to the city’s Electronic Recycling Center year-round. The center is located at 1306 Versailles Road
  • Collection bins will be available throughout Lexington. See the list of collection locations here: Light collection
