Western Hills ready for year two under Head Coach Simon Vanderpool

Team finished 3-7 last year, but had five victories. Two of those were forfeited afterwards.

FRANKFORT. Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Head Coach Simon Vanderpool has assembled the largest football roster in school history for the 2024 season at Western Hills.

Now the task at hand is to make more history.

“I feel like the team knows that (we have the largest team in school history) and we’re carrying ourselves a whole different way,” said defensive lineman Javeon Campbell.

Part of a aiming for record breaking season is the culture of the program, which Vanderpool says is in a good place.

“I think we are developing habits that are going to develop a championship culture. I feel like we’ve made a lot of strides to that and that we are progressing,” said Vanderpool, who enters his second season at the helm.

The Wolverines have a good returning core with some new additions to the roster.

  • Garrison Graves (Sr. | Returner)
  • Jaden Samuels (Jr. | Returner)
  • Javeon Campbell (Sr. | Returner)
  • Cam Rogers (Sr. | Transfer)
  • Cam Higgins (Sr. | Transfer)
  • JuJu Harmon (So. | Transfer)

For all of their players, being a part of the next step in a rebuild of a team means getting coached extra hard.

“I think the biggest thing is consistency. I think the kids respect that. We’re getting after it and we’re hard on our guys, but it’s to build better men and build them for their futures,” said Vanderpool.

“It’s a battle everyday,” said Campbell, a Kentucky football signee. “It feels pretty good to have someone getting on you everyday to get better.”
