Welcome sunshine helps clear roads
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A welcome dose of sunshine helped clear off some snow covered streets in Lexington today.
Fresh snow can reflect up to 80 percent of the sun’s energy, meaning the snow is very slow to warm up and melt. Some roads that were plowed earlier in the day, however, exposed some of the dark road which absorbs a larger percent of the sun’s energy. This warms up the road, helping to melt any leftover snow that the plow left behind, even though air temperatures are still below freezing.
Bottom line: even if you weren’t able to get all of that snow off your driveway today – the sun should have been able to help melt away the rest of it.
