Waste officials warn against throwing batteries in trash on National Battery Day

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Wednesday is National Battery Day, and waste management officials are reminding people to think twice before tossing used batteries into the trash or recycling bin.

According to Rumpke Waste & Recycling, batteries — especially lithium-ion and alkaline types — can spark dangerous fires inside garbage trucks and recycling facilities if they are not disposed of properly. Officials say damaged or improperly discarded batteries can overheat, explode, and pose serious risks to workers, first responders, and the public.

The reminder comes as the National Waste and Recycling Foundation launches a nationwide campaign encouraging residents to “Skip the Bin — Turn Your Batteries In,” promoting safer disposal practices.

Waste management leaders recommend placing used batteries in plastic bags or taping the terminals before taking them to approved drop-off locations. They say small steps like these can significantly reduce fire risks and help keep facilities running safely.

More information about proper battery disposal and nearby drop-off options is available at batterysafetynow.org.
