Warren County votes for right-to-work ordinance

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) — Warren County officials have given preliminary approval to an ordinance making the municipality a right-to-work area.

The Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1BwIzsg) the measure passed on Thursday states that no employee covered by the National Labor Relations Act "need join or pay dues to a union or refrain from joining a union, as a condition of employment."

A final reading is scheduled for Dec. 19, although it is unclear whether counties actually have the power to enact such measures. Spokeswoman Alison Martin said Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway will issue an opinion on the matter.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul released a statement saying the measure will help the county attract and keep jobs.

Eldon Renaud, president of Bowling Green’s United Auto Workers Local 2164, said it would drive down wages.
