War statue dedicated at Kentucky Horse Park

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The sun was certainly shining for the dedication of a new larger than life statue of a heroic Korean war horse, Sgt. Reckless.

A monument of the mare was unveiled Saturday afternoon at the Kentucky Horse Park.

It took more than two years for Marine Corps Vets and private citizens to raise funds to get the statue to the park.

Sgt. Reckless was a small Mongolian-bred mare who became a national hero in 1953 when she carried ammunition for the Marines during the Korean war.

During the battle of outpost Vegas, she made 51 trips to the gun sites often on her own.

She carried more than 9,000 pounds of ammunition on her back never stopping even though she was wounded twice.

Some of the Marines she served with were there Saturday to see her statue dedicated.
