Voter Registration Surges Ahead of May Primary in Kentucky
FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Secretary of State Michael Adams says there is a significant surge in voter registration leading up to the May primary, with 8,306 new voters registering from April 1 through the April 22 pre-primary registration deadline.
“It’s time for Kentuckians to have their say for President and other important offices,” stated Adams in a news release. “It remains easy to vote and hard to cheat in the Commonwealth.”
According to the Secretary of State’s Office, during April, 4,593 voters were removed from the rolls, including deceased voters, those who moved out of state, felony convicts, duplicates, voluntary de-registrations, and individuals adjudged mentally incompetent.
The release also says Republican registrants now make up 46 percent of the electorate, totaling 1,615,451 voters, with a .17 percent increase. Democratic registrants constitute 43 percent, totaling 1,511,242 voters, with a .05 percent decrease. Independent or third-party registrations account for 10 percent of the electorate, totaling 364,312 voters, with a .48 percent increase in “other” registrations.
Adams’ office says Kentuckians are eligible to vote early with no-excuse on May 16-18, and polling locations will be open from 6 am to 6 pm on May 21. More information, including polling locations, can be found here.
