Volunteers leave to help hurricane victims; Volunteers told to stand down hours later
STANFORD, Ky. (WTVQ) – Hurricane Dorian has made landfall to states on the coast but the strength of the storm wasn’t as strong as originally expected.
Organization across the nation have been on standby to help people in need including Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief.
A group of nine volunteers in Stanford left early Friday morning to go to North Carolina.
The volunteers started packing the mobile kitchen trailer before sunrise and once that was done the team left for North Carolina. They were joined by another 80 volunteers from around the state.
About three hours into the drive their plans changed. The feeding coordinator says they were stopped in Tennessee because the damage in North Carolina wasn’t as bad as they expected.
“God gives us the strength and the power to do what we do and we all love it and don’t complain a bit,” said Carolyn Hughes, Volunteer.
The volunteers are on their way back home to Stanford.
The feeding coordinator says the volunteers have been stood down completely and are no long on standby.
