Virtual learning allowed in some school districts

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Department of Education has approved waivers that will allow 13 school districts to continue teaching when classes are canceled because of bad weather or other emergencies.

Media report the action comes after last year’s harsh winter, which led to some districts canceling classes for several days at a time.

The waiver allows for up to 10 days of non-traditional instruction, which won’t have to be made up.

Lawrence County Superintendent Robbie Fletcher said that district would use online learning systems. He said students who don’t have Internet at home would be given hard copies of the work to be completed.

Other districts that got waivers include Boyle, Grant, Jessamine, Johnson, Leslie, Owsley, Pike, Taylor, Todd, Washington and Wolfe counties and Corbin Independent.
