Vintage Baseball comes to Waveland Historic Site
LEXINGTON, Ky (WTVQ) – A vintage baseball tournament called the Commonwealth Cup was held at the Waveland Historic Site in Lexington today.
The tournament was hosted by Lexington’s own Bluegrass Barons. Vintage Baseball is played in the same fashion as America’s past time was played in 1869. Today’s event saw teams from Dayton, Ohio and Georgetown play against the Barons.
Bluegrass Barons player Brian “Casper” Wallace told ABC 36 all about the ins and outs of the archaic rules of Vintage Baseball.
“No gloves, of course. You have to stop at first base, you can’t just run it. There are no balls, there are no strikes, you have an arbiter replacing the umpire. It’s a gentleman’s game. You make the calls yourself. The arbiter is there to settle any disputes,” Wallace said.
Specially made bats and balls are used for the game. The Bluegrass Barons were founded by Ben “Pops” Clause in 2016.
