Versailles family visits home won through St. Jude giveaway for first time

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- A family of four from Versailles pulled into their driveway in Lexington for the first time Friday morning after learning they won the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway.

Jeff, Darlene and Lauren gathered at the home on Pascoli Place in Lexington’s Tuscany subdivision Friday morning. The family was without their son, who was at camp.

“We’re pretty much still in shock for being able to win,” says Jeff Smiley, whose name was called live on ABC 36 News as the winner, Thursday evening.

For the Smiley family, their ticket purchase was to support St. Jude and their niece, a Transylvania University student partnering with the organization. They bought their ticket the first day they went on sale.

Touring the home, the family got to see its many unique features.

“The den is just beautiful. The windows are large and there’s so much light coming in and the colors are just so beautiful and we really love the kitchen as well,” says Darlene.

The family made it obvious they didn’t have any intention of winning the prize. They only hoped to support the organization.

“You know, we never expected to win anything. We just were like, ‘oh yes!’, let’s help this cause and it’s really incredible to be a part of it,” says Lauren, Jeff and Darlene’s daughter.

It’s too early for the family to know what they’ll do with their new home but they say they feel blessed by the fortune they’ve experienced.
