Utility Companies Reportedly Using Less Coal
New numbers show utility companies are using less coal, and that’s affecting Kentucky jobs.
The Associated Press says less than 40% of America’s electricity will be coal-based this year.
That’s the smallest percentage since World War II.
The AP says it’s because natural gas has become more plentiful and is cheaper as a result.
Virginia-based Alpha Natural Resources expects to reduce coal production by 11.5 million tons this year.
That’s as it closes mines and cuts jobs in Kentucky and West Virginia.
