UPDATE: Not guilty plea for delivery driver murder suspect
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – There are claims of innocence and a criminal history of the man accused in Lexington’s most recent murder.
Lexington Police accuse Antonio Lewis, 30, of killing Salahuddin Jitmoud.
Lexington Police say Jitmoud, 22, was delivering for Pizza Hut when he was found dead at the Walnut Hill Apartments on Trent Circle April 19th.
Police say Lewis robbed and cut Jitmoud in the neck, killing him.
Some members of the Muslim community wondered if his murder could have been a hate crime. Lexington police now say detectives believe it was a random robbery.
A judge entered a not guilty plea for Lewis. No bond was set. He will be appointed a public defender and is due in court May 7th.
“We have a faith as a citizen of the Lexington and of our police department and law enforcement agencies,” said Dr. Jamil Farooqui, who attended the same mosque as Jitmoud. “And we are hoping that it turns out to be a just, full investigation.”
“I want the family to know that my brother did not do it,” said Alnisha Lewis, the suspect’s sister. “And they will find out at the end, when it is all said and done, it will be found out that my brother is very innocent.”
According to Fayette County Court documents, Lewis has a criminal history going back to 2006. Records show most of the charges were drug and alcohol related or for trespassing.
