UPDATE: McConnell Defeats Grimes In U.S. Senate Race
The Associated Press called the race for Mitch McConnell at 7:01 PM, just 60 seconds after the polls closed in the western part of the state. Kentucky voters sent Senator McConnell back to Washington for a 6th term.
"It’s time to go in a new direction," said McConnell.
He thanked his supporters.
"It’s time to turn this country around," said McConnell.
McConnell said the election was not about him, or his opponent. McConell said the election was about how people do not trust the federal government.
"A government that can’t be trusted to do the basic things, because it’s too busy focusing on things it shouldn’t be focusing on at all," said McConnell.
That’s how McConnell described President Obama’s administration.
"Tonight kentucky rejected that approach," said McConnell.
While McConnell said he would fight the President, he admitted the election won’t immediately change things.
"I don’t expect the president to wake up tomorrow and view the world any differently than he did when he woke up this morning. He knows I won’t either," said McConnell.
McConnell promised to bring Kentucky’s concerns to Washington D.C.
"And I will not let you down, thank you so much," exclaimed McConnell.
McConnell said he spoke Tuesday night with Alison Lundergan Grimes. He said she ran a spirited and hard fought campaign. McConnell said she earned his respect.
This race was one of the most expensive senate races in U.S. history.
