UPDATE: Lexington Fire Department Calls ‘Wreck Free Day’ A Success

The Lexington Fire Department said there was a 27-percent reduction in total vehicle accidents compared to the last eight years on Sunday, October 19, 2014, which the department designated a ‘Wreck Free Day,’ as part of a Firefighter Safety Initiative.

The department wanted to raise awareness about distracted driving in Fayette County and chose the third weekend in October because over the last eight years, the number of wrecks in the city on that weekend doubled from an average of 25 to 50.5, according to the department.

"We feel certain that the help we got from both the media and our citizens helped make this a success," said Lexington Firefighter Kyle Branham, the program organizer.
