UPDATE: Kentucky State Police investigating fatal trooper-involved shooting in Knox County
ROCKHOLDS, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating a trooper-involved shooting that left a suspect dead Monday evening in Knox County.
According to KSP, the incident occurred just after 6 p.m. at 635 Hubbs Hollow Road in Rockholds. Troopers were assisting the Barbourville Police Department in executing an active arrest warrant for 44-year-old Steven M. Carter when they encountered him behind the residence armed with a firearm.
Investigators say a trooper gave verbal commands for Carter to drop his weapon before firing his agency-issued firearm, fatally wounding him. The Knox County Coroner pronounced Carter dead at the scene at 7:44 p.m.
KSP stated the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives working to interview witnesses and gather evidence.
