UPDATE: Funeral arrangements set for bicyclist killed in Georgetown

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ)- Funeral arrangements have been made for a Lexington lawyer who was hit and killed during a cycling event. The Fayette County coroner says 57-year-old Mark Hinkel died Saturday at U.K. Hospital.

Investigators say Hinkel was riding in a cycling event in Georgetown Saturday when he was hit by a truck. Investigators say that Hinkel ended up in the bed of the truck, and the driver kept going.

The sheriff’s office says a deputy later spotted the truck and stopped it. Investigators say the driver, Paz-Odilon Salvador, was arrested and charged with murder, wanton endangerment, DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. Deputies say Salvador had a cold beer in a cup holder in the truck. They say he later admitted he had drank six beers and smoked marijuana.

Meanwhile, the visitation for Hinkel will be from 4-9PM Wednesday at Milward Funeral Home in Lexington. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30AM Thursday at the Cathedral of Christ the King in the Lexington.

Hinkel’s obituary says he was a 1975 graduate of Lexington Catholic High School, and later earned his undergraduate and law degrees from University of Kentucky.
He was a partner in the law firm of Landrum & Shouse, and served on the Board of Directors of the Fayette County Bar Association.

Memorial contributions can be sent to the Mark J. Hinkel Fund, Lexington Catholic High School, 2250 Clays Mill Road, Lexington, KY 40503 or Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass, 1300 Sports Center Drive, Lexington, KY 40502.
