UPDATE: Fayette School Board Begins Process To Find Interim Superintendent

The Fayette County Board of Education went into closed session at its meeting Monday to discuss the names of possible candidates to be the interim superintendent in the wake of Dr. Tom Shelton’s resignation last week.

The Kentucky School Boards Association keeps a list of retired superintendents who have expressed an interest in serving school districts in an interim capacity, according to the board chairman.

The board is scheduled to meet this Thursday, November 13, to officially accept Dr. Shelton’s resignation, develop interview questions for the interim candidates and review a list of possible interim superintendents identified by the Kentucky School Boards Association.

The board hopes to have a permanent superintendent chosen and ready to begin work on July 1, 2015, according to Board Chairman John Price.

Since the board will elect a new chair and vice-chair in January, members held off Monday on forming a Superintendent Screening Committee.

The board did talk briefly at its meeting about the possibility of hiring a search firm to help find a permanent replacement for Dr. Shelton, who will leave his post in December.

The resignation was announced by Dr. Shelton on November 6, just two days after he said he was approached and accepted a leadership position with the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents.
