Update: Democrat James Kay Wins Special Election For State House Seat

Democrat James Kay defeated two challengers in a special election Tuesday to fill the vacant 56th House District in Central Kentucky.

Here are the vote totals from the Kentucky Secretary of State’s Office:

  • James Kay (D) 3,925
  • Lyen Crews (R) 3,065
  • John-Mark Hack (I) 1,925

The 56th House District is made up of Woodford County and parts of Fayette and Franklin counties.

Democrat Carl Rollins of Midway resigned the seat to take the top job with the state student financial aid agency.

Kay’s victory protected the Democrats 10-seat advantage in the state House, 55-to-45.

Kay is a 30-year old attorney who was making his first bid for public office.

Meantime, Independent opponent John-Mark Hack sent out a news release that said he would ask the state Board of Elections to investigate why 55 students at Woodford County High School were reportedly denied their right to vote in the special election.

He claimed in the release that the students’ voter registration cards may have been intentionally filed too late.
