UPDATE: Arrest made in carjacking-robbery

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Police arrested a man Friday in connection to a carjacking and robbery that began at St. Joseph Hospital on Thursday.

Investigators say deputies went to a vacant home on Gladman Way looking for a woman wanted on a warrant.  They say instead, they found 27-year old Jody Shipman, who was wanted in the carjacking and robbery case.  Police say he was arrested without incident.

According to the jail website, Shipman faces a half-dozen charges, including robbery, fraudulent use of a credit card, criminal trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia.  Investigators say he could face additional charges because he’s accused of using a gun in commission of the crime.

Police say Shipman forced a woman at gunpoint to withdraw money from an ATM.  Investigators say the woman was walking to her car in the St. Joseph Hospital parking garage when Shipman approached her and demanded money.

Investigator say the woman gave him money from her purse, but Shipman told her it wasn’t enough, so he forced her into the passenger side of her own car and drove her to a bank.

Police say Shipman forced the woman to withdraw more money from an ATM and then drove her to a nearby subdivision.

Investigator say Shipman told the woman to wait five minutes after he got out of the car and then she could get her car keys from a windowsill of a nearby church.

Police say as he left, Shipman took the woman’s car keys and cell phone.  Investigators say the woman followed Shipman’s instructions by waiting five minutes, walked to the church and found her car keys on the windowsill.

Investigators say the woman drover back to St. Joseph Hospital where she called police.

Police say Shipman was also involved in a separate, unrelated robbery, but couldn’t immediately provide any details.

Shipman was jailed in the Fayette County Detention Center.
