UPDATE: Accused scam artist arrested at hotel
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A man Lexington Police say was trying to scam people by claiming he was raising money for area charities was arrested Tuesday night at a hotel in the Hamburg area of Lexington.
Police say 51-year old Kenneth Roth was staying in a hotel room longer than it was booked for and ordering room service with no intention of paying for it. Police say he was charged with Theft by Deception.
He was booked into a different room with bars on the window at the Fayette County Detention Center.
Investigators say prior to his arrest, Roth was soliciting donations for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Angel Tree program. They say he also claimed to be with the United Way, Make A Wish Foundation, churches and other local organizations.
Police say they didn’t think he is actually a volunteer or employee of any legitimate non-profit group.
