University of Kentucky receives $50 million donation for children’s hospital expansion

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – In one of the largest gifts in UK HealthCare history, New York philanthropist Tom Golisano has donated $50 million to support the University of Kentucky’s children’s hospital.

UK officials say the transformational endowment will advance pediatric care across the Commonwealth — funding research, expanding access to specialized medical services, and supporting the education and training of medical staff.

Dr. Carol Steltenkamp, with UK Pediatrics and Director of External Affairs, called the gift a turning point for children’s healthcare in Kentucky.

“It’s incredible,” she said. “I’ve been here over 30 years. I’ve seen us grow from a floor in the adult hospital to what we are today, and now this gift is so transformational — it shows us what we will become as a tower, the Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Kentucky.”

The $50 million donation is the second-largest in UK’s history and marks a major step toward the university’s mission of improving the health and well-being of children and families statewide.
