University of Kentucky increasing security after recent shooting

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The University of Kentucky (UK) is increasing safety measures for students following a shooting incident near campus last weekend. UK Police announced additional security patrols and enhanced lighting on North Campus, especially around the Winslow Street area where shots were fired early last Sunday morning.

Extra officers will patrol from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, according to UK Police. Officials are also installing temporary floodlights on Winslow Street, near the location of the off-campus shooting that occurred outside the Raising Cane’s on South Upper and Winslow Streets.

In response to the incident, UK sent safety alerts to students. Although vehicles were damaged in the shooting, no injuries were reported. The university’s expanded security plan includes restricting access to garages and parking lots and adding more cameras and blue emergency towers throughout the area.
