Union workers gather to celebrate Labor Day

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Union workers in Lexington gathered to celebrate Labor Day at Masterson Station Park.

“The middle class built this country, unions built the middle class, and this is what it’s all about,” President of Teamsters Local 651 James Brant said. “It needs to be recognized because, in my opinion, it is the most important thing in this country.”

While the celebrations were underway, workers also bringing attention to those currently on strike.

“Right now, we actually have a union on strike. The CWA is actually striking against AT&T so we wish them all the best of luck,” President of Bluegrass Central Labor Council Amy Beasley said.

Union members say collaboration is what allows change to happen.

“I don’t have to fight for equal pay at my job because the union already fought for me for equal pay,” Beasley said.

“Everybody’s more powerful, their voice is more heard than individuals,” Brant said.

They say today represents a day to celebrate those who helped build our country and continue to do so.

“It’s a day to say, ‘take a day off’ let’s recognize hard work,” Brant said.

So, with bounce houses, free food, a live band, face painting and more, that is exactly what these workers are doing today.
