Police: Baseball cap leads to murder suspect

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Police say a baseball cap helped lead them to the suspect in the murder of a Lexington woman in 2014.

Court documents say 22-year-old Allen Burgess fired shots into a home during a party at 457 Scottsdale Circle, killing 18-year-old Kierra Johnson and injuring three people on June 30, 2014.

Police say one of the four men spotted running from the scene dropped a baseball cap.

After DNA testing, investigators say they discovered the hat belonged to Allen Burgess.

Investigators had Burgess’ DNA because he was already in the system.

Back in 2013, he was charged with complicity to commit murder after the fatal shooting of Joseph Randolph in Lexington.

Police say, at the time, Burgess was charged with Johnson’s murder, he was in jail in Bourbon County on an unrelated charge.

They also say during that arrest, a gun was found on Burgess and it matched the weapon used in Johnson’s murder.

Police also say Burgess was in a feud with a man who was in the home during the shooting.
