UK’s VIP Center helping sexual assault victims

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – More than a thousand students said they had been sexually assaulted on University of Kentucky’s campus in the past year, according to the results of a student survey. More than half of those assaulted were never reported to authorities.

Sadly, experts say, that’s not unusual.

It’s a trend that’s not only seen at the university, but across the country. According to the Justice Department, 68% of rapes go unreported.

Experts say it’s a topic that most victims never want to talk about it or think about it again.

“No one wants to be defined by that and often just taking in the effect that they’ve been assaulted,” says Rhonda Henry, the director of UK’s Violence Intervention and Prevention Center. “Calling themselves a survivor can feel [like] it’s an identity that no one wants to take on.”

UK’s Violence Intervention and Prevention Center, known on campus as VIP Center, is a confidential place where victims of sexual assault, partner violence and stalking can get help.

Henry says when a victim comes to the VIP Center, it’s their choice to report the crime or just talk.

“Probably the biggest thing is trying to get the point across to students and the victims to come forward,” says UK Police Chief Joe Monroe. “Let us help you. If you don’t want to go through a criminal process, that’s fine, we’ll still get you the help that you need.”

Henry says it might feel like the end of the world, but there are people that can and want to help. She says not getting help can be detrimental.
