UK student indicted for reckless homicide in deadly crash

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A University of Kentucky student is now facing a reckless homicide charge in connection to a 2018 crash the left a 4-year-old boy dead.

Police accuse 18-year-old Jacob Heil of driving under the influence when he hit 4-year-old Marco Lee Shemwell, who was walking on the side of the road near Kroger Field.

Documents say Heil had a blood alcohol level of .051, over the legal limit for people younger than 21.

Police say Heil told them he was leaving a tailgating party where he says he drank two beers several hours before the crash.

He was charged with driving under the influence and pleaded not guilty in September.

In addition to the reckless homicide charge, the grand jury indictment filed Wednesday also includes the DUI charge.
