UK re-unveils controversial mural at Memorial Hall
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A University of Kentucky mural that has been shrouded for months over its controversial depiction of slavery and Native Americans has been unveiled.
The mural, located at Memorial Hall, now features a plaque that addresses the history of the piece.
The University of Kentucky says their African-American students had complained to President Eli Capilouto about the artwork saying it was not complete in its depiction of the slave experience.
The mural was shrouded about a year ago and a committee including faculty, staff and students was formed to address the concerns of those offended by the artwork.
The University told ABC 36 it wanted to preserve the art piece, and believes the new plaques will now help put the mural in proper context.
