UK offering one dollar meals to students
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – After six days, students on the University of Kentucky campus ended their hunger strike on Tuesday.
They were protesting the lack of help for hungry students.
Students with the basic needs campaign met with the university’s president to discuss their needs.
The university took action quickly and worked with their dining partner to come up with the idea of a one dollar cafe.
UK’s Fusion Cafe on the second floor of Erikson Hall will become the ‘One Community Cafe’.
For one dollar, any student on campus can get an entree and two sides, with vegan options.
“I think it was a victory for us as far as the basic needs campaign and stop hunger, but also a victory towards student voices,” said John Waldrop, UK Student.
“This provides a good, healthy and very affordable option for students who are hurrying and on the go but still need a good meal,” said Jay Blanton, UK Spokesperson.
The new cafe will open on Monday and it will be only be open four hours a day, Monday through Friday.
