‘Uber for kids:” Lexington mother helps busy parents and busy kids

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A Lexington woman wants to help parents with a problem we’re seeing across the state – getting kids to and from school.

Unique Coffey says she understands the hassle of juggling work with trying to take your kids to school, day care and practice.

That’s where Busy Kids Transportation comes in.

“If you have to get your child off to their sporting event or practice, violin practice – whatever is it that you can’t help get your child to, we’re going to help them get there,” Coffey, founder of Busy Kids Transportation, said.

“I thought of the idea about three years ago. Being a single parent, I was working at Amazon, and I had children that needed to get to school and child care, and work still started before any of those places even opened up.”

Coffey said she couldn’t find that kind of service, and was fired from several jobs for being late.

“There’s a lot of single mothers that have this issue because we know the places that pay better, Amazon and Toyota, their clock starts either while your child is in school or before your child goes to school, Coffey said.

She has two clients so far – a single mother and single father. Coffey has two vans and two drivers.

She’s taking applications and has been talking to Fayette County Public Schools about taking over some of its routes.

The district has cancelled and delayed routes every day now for more than a week due to its driver and monitor shortage.

For now, FCPS has agreed to let Coffey advertise in the schools starting this week.

Coffey said in starting her business, she solved her own struggle with getting her busy kids around, and like many parents during this pandemic, she grew closer to them.

“I’m actually able to see their improvement, see their growth, see how great of a young man they’re becoming, and so I think it’s all coming full circle,” Coffey said.
