Two-year anniversary of the deadly floods in Eastern Kentucky
EASTERN KENTUCKY (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – This weekend marks the two-year anniversary of the devastating and deadly flooding that struck Eastern Kentucky in 2022. The catastrophic event claimed 45 lives and caused extensive damage, destroying hundreds of homes, bridges, and roads.
Governor Andy Beshear announced that he will visit several counties in Eastern Kentucky to commemorate the anniversary and highlight ongoing recovery and rebuilding efforts. The governor’s itinerary includes stops in Floyd, Knott, Perry, and Breathitt counties on Friday.
Since the floods, significant progress has been made in the affected areas. Governor Beshear reported that 138 bridges have been repaired or replaced, and seven new high-ground communities are under construction in four counties. These developments will bring more than 500 new homes to the region, with additional recovery efforts underway.
“Here in Kentucky, we are going to continue to work to get things done. And while many communities and families are still recovering, this is a multi-year rebuild,” stated Governor Beshear.
The visit underscores the commitment of state officials to support and rebuild the impacted communities, ensuring they emerge stronger from the disaster.
