Two fishermen saved after flooding in boat
RUSSELL COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A dangerous situation unfolded Tuesday morning near the dam in Russell County, when two fishermen were nearly swept into the turbulent discharge area after their boat lost power and began taking on water.
The incident happened around 10 a.m. Emergency crews responded quickly, with help from Russell County Dispatch, Emergency Management, EMS, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Water flow from the dam was temporarily shut down, and a marine unit was able to rescue both men midstream before the situation turned deadly.
Officials say this incident is a reminder of just how quickly things can go wrong near a dam. Boaters are urged to stay at least 500 feet away from discharge areas and remain alert to rapidly changing conditions.
