Lexington, Ky (WTVQ): Friday morning, three people were hit by a car, including two kindergartners near Bruce and West Second Street. According to the Lexington Police Department, the call came in around 7 Friday morning. According to Fayette County Public Schools, a five-year-old boy and six-year-old girl accompanied by a 42-year-old father, were hit by a 91-year-old woman.
According to authorities, the father and children, who were walking to Harrison Elementary school on a cross walk, suffered only minor injuries in the incident.
Lauralee Estill, a mother who lives down in the neighborhood, says she’s concerned with how fast cars travel on this road. has lived in this neighborhood for a year. “It’s just the most terrifying thing in the world,” she said. “I don’t know if I would still walk my kids to school. I think I would put them in the car. If that happened to us. Which is awful because I love walking my kids to school every day,”
Estill has two children below the age of 10, she worries about the crosswalk safety. “There’s also not a ton of light, and there’s definitely no crossing guard to help people get across the street every morning,” she said. “Like there are in other neighborhoods where there’s a school,” she said.
Estill is especially concerned since she takes her young ones to school and since there are many schools in the area. “There are lots of kids going to school every morning, and the lack of crosswalks and the lack of visibility for the crosswalks,” she said.
She hopes some changes get made for families living on this street, who utilize the crosswalk. “Visibility, lights, maybe a crossing guard. But making sure the sidewalk is wheelchair and stroller accessible.”
According to Fayette County Public Schools, the district crisis response team is at Harrison Elementary School, to provide support for students and staff. The Lexington Police Department says no charges are expected to be filed against the driver.
