LPD: 2 suspects arrested in robbery scheme that led to fatal shooting
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Police Department has charged two individuals in connection to an incident that led to a fatal shooting Saturday on Woodland Avenue.
Police say Nicholas V. Coriaci, 18, (above, left,) and Jaydon B. Whalen, 19, were arrested Monday and charged with robbery. Police say they have also obtained an arrest warrant for Alex P. Ferrell, 19, also for Robbery.
All three are University of Kentucky students, say investigators.
According to detectives, the suspects had planned to rob another man under the guise of a narcotics transaction. Investigators determined that the three suspects, along with 28-year-old James N. Gordon, arranged to meet on Woodland Avenue.
When the acquaintance arrived at Woodland Avenue, the suspects and Mr. Gordon showed a weapon and attempted to rob him. The acquaintance then pulled out a gun and shot Gordon and Coriaci.
Gordon later died from his injury.
The shooter is claiming self-defense and has cooperated with investigators. He is currently not charged in this case.
On Wednesday Ferrell pleaded not guilty . he judge set his bond at $2,500.
Ferrell is scheduled to appear in court again on the 22nd at 8:00 am.
