Two arrested on ATM skimming charges at Lexington Kroger

Police used license plate readers to locate suspect vehicle

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Two men are facing financial crimes charges, accused of placing skimming devices on several ATMs in Lexington.

According to Lexington police, UK police contacted them about a suspected vehicle, involved in fraudulent ATM transactions.

Police say detectives, using license plate readers, were able to locate the vehicle at the Kroger location on Euclid Avenue, where two suspects, 27-year old Vitus Kraus and 45-year old Florin-Dan Balan, were arrested and charged for criminal possession of a forged instrument, trafficking financial information, false making a credit card and other charges.

Detectives say Kraus and Balan were using skimming devices at four other Kroger locations in Lexington.

At this time, they say the extent of the financial data compromised in not known.

Detectives ask anyone who may have used the ATMs at Kroger to check their accounts.

Both Kraus and Balan are being held at the Fayette County Detention Center.
