Trump’s visit to Rupp Arena brings in protestors
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) — President Donald Trump’s visit to Rupp Arena in downtown Lexington brought in hundreds of supporters, but also several dozen protestors.
The “Keep America Great” rally in support of Governor Matt Bevin started at 7 p.m. but protestors were out as early as 9 a.m.
The ‘whiny baby Trump’ balloon was probably the most creative protest out there.
Two groups raised more than $5,000 to bring this big balloon to town.
It’s become well-known for appearing across the world on the President’s travels.
We spoke with a person who works with local organizations to bring the balloon to an area: his title – “the babysitter.” He came with the balloon all the way from New Jersey.
“If people reach out to us at babytrumptour.org they’ll find ways to adopt the baby and the price depends on how far we have to go. If it’s a helium inflation or cold air inflation and what’s involved in facilitating putting it up,” says Rob Kennedy, “babysitter” for the balloon.
Protestor Don Bolton says he isn’t here for a political agenda ahead of Election Day. He says he’s out here solely to protest Trump.
“He’s a racist and I want to get him out of office. He’s destroying our constitution,” says Bolton.
Protestors trickled in throughout the day, spread out across downtown.
Dozens were out here getting loud. We even saw a few verbal altercations between supporters and protestors.
Some held signs taking jabs at both Trump and Bevin, one saying “No Devin. Failed in Kentucky. No Trump.”
We talked with protestors who had Andy Beshear signs.
They say they want to be out here to encourage everyone to go vote Tuesday.
“I think we need more progressive leadership. I think that Mr. Trump hasn’t done much of anything for the country. I think it’s rubbed off on Matt Bevin. They seem to see eye to eye on a lot of things. I think the tariffs have been terrible for the farmers, the sheet metal workers. A lot of folks here will tell you the same thing,” says protestor Arthur Rouse.
Rouse says he’s not concerned Trump’s visit is going to hurt Beshear on Election Day and many other protestors felt the same.
The polls open Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. and will close at 6 p.m.
