Truck Hits Fire Hydrant, Flooding Street

Residents in one Lexington neighborhood woke up to a wet mess Wednesday. Police say that shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday a man drove his truck into a fire hydrant on Shoreside Drive, leaving a wet mess on the entire roadway. Police don’t believe speed or alcohol was a factor in the accident, however it is still not clear what caused the 39 year old driver to veer off the road, hit a hydrant and land in front of someone’s yard.

The accident left water gushing into the street, a large gaping hole in one neighbor’s yard and some debris in the roadway. Police say the man was the only occupant in the vehicle. He was unresponsive and taken to Saint Joseph East for treatment. One neighbor says she heard the commotion while watching a UK game. It all happened in front of her home.

"Just heard a loud explosion," says Lisa Wilson. "Water was gushing up and I noticed the fire hydrant was gone and there was a truck in my neighbors yard. It doesn’t seem like he hit anybody else’s vehicle. He hit the fire hydrant and that’s good".

Crews spent all morning knocking on doors, asking neighbors to move their cars away from that driveway. Wilson especially had to move her car because she was told the bottom of her driveway could collapse. Crews will work to replace the concrete and the fire hydrant. That could take several weeks.
