Trooper shot and killed in Lyon County

Kentucky State Police say a trooper was shot and killed Sunday night in Lyon County.
It happened on I24 at around 10:30 p.m.
They say the trooper, 31-year-old Joseph Cameron Ponder ,was involved in a high-speed chase, with the suspect stopping abruptly around the 49 mile marker.
State police say Ponder’s police cruiser hit the rear of the suspect vehicle and the driver of that vehicle fired several shots into the cruiser, hitting Ponder multiple times.
The suspect fled the scene on foot.
Trooper Ponder was taken to the Caldwell Medical Center in Princeton where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
Ponder was a native of Rineyville and graduated from the KSP Training Academy in January of this year.
The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks of Missouri.
He is described as a black male approximately 5’5″, 140 pounds, brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing dark clothing.
If anyone makes contact with the suspect, dial 911. Police say he should be considered armed and dangerous.
