Travel this Memorial Day Weekend is expected to increase this year

KENTUCKY (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – With Memorial Day approaching, there is an expected uptick in travel this year. More than five hundred thousand Kentuckians are anticipated to travel for the holiday weekend, marking an increase from last year and the highest number since 2005.

Travelers on the road this weekend may notice a slight decrease in gas prices compared to recent years, but this trend may not continue. “We may see gas prices tick up a bit as we get into summer travel. Demand goes up, but we haven’t had a real strong period of demand this spring, and so that’s helped to keep those gas prices more stable,” said AAA Public Affairs Manager Lori Weaver-Hawkins. Travelers can expect to pay two cents less for gas than last year, with the national average being three dollars and thirty-two cents.

The busiest days for travel are expected to be Thursday, Friday, Sunday, and Monday. Nationwide, more than 44 million people are expected to make a trip for the holiday.
