Travel safety tips for frigid weekend

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Temperatures are going to drop tonight, but before that drivers need to be cautious on the roads.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, heavy rain can make the roads slick before snow and ice arrive.

Drivers should also be aware of ponding water because your car can hydroplane if you hit the right spot.

In preparation for winter weather tonight, crews will be watching the weather forecast and precipitation and as soon as precipitation changes, crews will go out.

“If you can stay home that is the best advice that we want to give at this time. However, if you have to be out you need to make sure that your car has been winterized and that you have all the equipment with if something should happen with your vehicle. You also can call the safe patrol too. That’s a state service where the trucks will come out and give you assistance,” says Natasha Lacy, District 7 Transportation Cabinet Public Information Officer.

The Transportation Cabinet will have 70 state trucks ready to go plus an additional contractor trucks.
