Transferring vehicle ownership in Ky.? You can now keep your license plates
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) — If you’re transferring vehicle ownership in 2024, you can now keep your license plates thanks to a new system upgrade the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is rolling out.
The new Kentucky Automated Vehicle Information System coming to the state in mid-January 2024 will modernize and change some current practices — including keeping your license plates and being able to retain unexpired registration.
This move will help save Kentuckians money, the department added.
“Upgrading to a new vehicle information system unlocks opportunities for us to implement new ways to make the process of transferring vehicle ownership better for Kentuckians, and in some cases, keep more money in their pockets,” said Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray.
During the upgrade period, motor vehicle departments across the state will close from Dec. 29 until Jan. 16 at 8 a.m.
Those due to renew their vehicle or boat registration, vehicle and boat titling and transfers, disabled parking permit issuance and license plate issuance will be unable to do so during that time.
